12.19.10

"You keep your distance
Like, for instance, when you told me we should take it slow
It’s been forever
It’s now or never, and it might be time to let this go
And I know that I - I’ve gotta get away ‘cause I’ve had enough…

Time, you always needed more time
But all we’ve ever had is time
So now this is the last time
But I’ll be fine

Not that I’m caring
But it’s apparent that you’re not what you pretend to be
I thought I knew you
I’m seeing through you, and you never saw yourself with me
And I know that I - I’ve gotta get away ‘cause I’ve had enough…

I’ve gotta let this go
It’s holding me down, it’s holding me down!
I’ve gotta let this go!
And I know that I – I’ve gotta get away ‘cause I’ve had enough
I know that I – I’ve gotta get away"

Time -Nevertheless

Sowing. Reaping. Giving. Loving.

"Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love." (Hos 10:12). "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." (2 Cor 9:6-9)

Nightmare

I had a dream last night. It was one of those dreams that feels so real you still believe it for a few moments after you wake up. It was horrible and I never want to have that dream or any other similar dream again.

But unfortunately I don't control what I dream about.

Or think about.

In this dream it was as if I had traveled back in time. It was almost 2 years ago and my ex and I were still together. The only difference was I knew then what I know now. But I was trapped and couldn't stop it from happening. I just had to live through it all over again. He didn't know. This was just like the first time for him. But not for me. I knew exactly what was coming but powerless to do anything about it.

So in my dream we would be out doing something together, or cuddling on the couch, and he'd tell me that he loved me and all I could think about was how that wouldn't change the inevitable breakup. And I felt guilty and betrayed by self because I had no control over the subconscious feeling of enjoying being together.

I kept telling myself not to be fooled because even though he seemed so genuine it didn't matter. The breakup was still coming. And I needed to harden myself against the forthcoming blow but I couldn't. I kept thinking and hoping that maybe this time it would be different.

Even though I knew it wouldn't. It couldn't.

And then I woke up, thankfully before he broke up with me. This would have been the thousandth time in my head. But I still felt sad that I couldn't have slept just a little bit longer, relived the good part just a little bit more. And then I got angry at myself for feeling that way.

So I got up out of bed but that dream haunted me all day.

I dream about him often. Way more often than I should. And that makes me mad! Because I can't control it.

I just want him to go away. I just need him to leave me alone.

I'm afraid to go to sleep.

Linkin Park - Roads Untraveled

Weep not for roads untraveled
Weep not for paths left alone
'Cause beyond every bend
Is a long blinding end
It's the worst kind of pain
I've known

Give up your heart left broken
And let that mistake pass on
'Cause the love that you lost
Wasn't worth what it cost
And in time you'll be glad it's gone

Weep not for roads untraveled
Weep not for sights unseen
May your love never end
And if you need a friend
There's a seat here alongside me

Blame the Whores

Today I would like to share an actual conversation that I had with a friend.

Friend: Haha okay!! :) we both decided we deserve a night out because we are sick of boys and dating.

Me: Ain't that the truth!

Friend: Wouldn't it be so nice to not have to go through all the games and meet an actual nice guy who cares and wants to date you?

Me: Wait, do those guys actually exist?
Me: I thought that was a myth!

Friend: You know I have heard of it only happening once or twice so it must not be true.

Me: You know who I blame?

Friend: Ooo please share!

Me: Girls. But not just any girls. The whores.
Me: Because guys used to have to work for it. And honestly, guys haven't changed much. They pretty much all want sex. Always have and always will. But they used to understand that to get it they had to be nice to us and date us and maybe marry us one day. But then the whorenado hit and now guys are spoiled and lazy because they can get sex (or sexual favors) from almost anyone, practical strangers even, because girls are willing to just give it out for free.
Me: So if you're a girl who actually respects herself like we do, the guys give up too easily because they can get what they want from almost any other girl. They no longer have to be nice and take time to get to know us and become attached on a deeper level first. So most of them just don't. It's sad really.

Friend: Yes!!!!! I agree!!!!

Me: I hope they all get STD's and die.

First Kisses

"Whenever I come back the air on railroad is making the same sounds."

I don't know why but it's been on my mind lately. Probably because it's been so long since I've had a really good one. You know, the one you anticipate for a long while and when it finally happens it's like a deep breath or a sigh of relief.

I guess maybe it's been bothering me because while I've kissed plenty of guys (not too many mind you, just...plenty) and I've kissed several others in the last year since him.... the kiss I never got still haunts me. It probably doesn't help that I still don't have closure and probably never will.

"The shop fronts on holly are dirty words (asterisks in for the vowels)."

My favorite kisses are the ones with stories. The ones you tell over again to your girl friends, even years and boyfriends later. And first kisses are usually some of the best.

"We peered through windows. New bottoms on barstools but the people remain the same, with prices inflating."

There is one particular kiss that has been my favorite so far. It was a first kiss and by far the most romantic kiss I've ever received.

"As if saved from the gallows, there's a bellow of buzzers and the people stop working, and they're all so excited."

Looking back I know that he planned it. And even though it didn't go perfectly according to plan it remains above all the other kisses because it was planned and therefore means more. I mean, don't get me wrong, spontaneous kisses are great and I've had my share of good ones. But it's just nice to know that your kiss means so much to someone that he would plan it so carefully. I guess you'll understand when you hear the story.

"Excited."

I had been crushing on this guy. We were pretty good friends though we hadn't known each other that long. And I didn't think of him in that way at all until one night he secretly held my hand while watching a movie at a friends place. From that moment on we started casually dating. We weren't ever "official" and the entire relationships only lasted a few months. And honestly it never really had a future because I was scared and didn't know what I was doing. But in those few months I was ruined by what a perfect boyfriend could be like. None before and none since have quite measured up. Which is funny because I never really loved Ian. We never said "I love you" to each other. And I've loved others much more since. But Ian was by far the best "boyfriend" I've ever had and like I said, we were never "official".

"Passing through unconscious states, when I awoke I was on the highway."

One night we had gone on a date and instead of taking me back to my dorm we drove out to some old train tracks. We spent some time walking in the moonlight, hand-in-hand, looking at the stars and talking about our lives. Afterwards we drove to the middle of a large field and sat in his car talking, holding hands, and listening to music. I hadn't listened to much variety before college and before Ian I'd never heard Death Cab For Cutie. I was instantly in love...with the band. Even now I can't listen to their old stuff (pre Plans) without thinking of him. He kept playing me some of his favorites and explaining why. And if there is one thing I love more than anything else it's talking about music and lyrics and how they make me feel and what they mean. Finally he puts on the song "A Movie Script Ending" and told me to pay special attention to the lyrics. If you aren't familiar with the song you can listen to it here (<-- link). The lyrics are written throughout this post.

By this time he was awkwardly leaning over my lap (in the passenger seat - ha, another DCFC song) against the dash and passenger door. We were still holding hands and staring in each others eyes. And when the song ends he leans over....and replays it. He mentioned again that it was a favorite and I liked it so I didn't mind. After the 2nd time through he replayed it again. By this time he was acting a bit different as it played through. And he kept pointing out a single line each time through.

"With my hands on your shoulders, a meaningless movement, a movie script ending."

And on the fourth time through the song, on that line above, he leaned in, placed a hand on my shoulder, and kissed me.

"And the patrons are leaving, leaving."

When the song was over he didn't reply it.

"Now we all know the words were true in the sappiest songs. Yes, yes."

We let the CD play through.

"I'll put them to bed but they won't sleep. They're just shuffling the sheets. They toss and turn."

And play through again.

"You can't begin to get it back."

And we made out to a great Death Cab For Cutie mix.

"Passing through unconscious states."

One of the most memorable nights of my life.

"When I awoke I was on the onset of a later stage. The headlights are beacons on the highway..."

I'm just waiting for another guy to come along and kiss me like that. That will be special and 1000 times better than the meaningless kisses I've had recently. It's almost enough to give up meaningless kissing altogether...

....almost. :P

Crazy

Someone asked me recently what the craziest thing I'd ever done was. I'd have to say that the craziest thing I've ever done was in college. This is that story.

My roommate, a classmate, and I found this wooden cross that was basically 2 old pieces of wood nailed together while cleaning out the prop warehouse. We decided that we just had to think of something to do with it. So we put it in my trunk until we thought of the perfect thing.

About a week later there was some caution tape surrounding a circular piece of ground in the park in the middle of campus. The tape made pretty close to a perfect circle between 2 benches and 2 trees. That's when we decided it was time to use the cross. So late one night we snuck into the park and placed the cross in the center of blocked off area. We took a few pictures for evidence later and waited to see what would happen. The next day the sudden appearance of a "grave" was all anyone was talking about around campus. We sat on a bench in the park and watched student pass it by while staring or talking in groups around it. The talk around campus after that first day was that no one knew what it was, how it got there, and why it was there. So we decide to leave it up for a few days just for fun. The next day we all go to chapel and the president of the school gets up and starts talking about one of his best friends who had passed away suddenly that week. The next thing we know the gossip around campus is that the "grave" in Alumni Park was for President Conn's friend that had died.

We didn't know what to do. We didn't want to come out and say it was us and we were just messing around because now we would seem insensitive, even though we didn't know anyone had died when we placed the cross as a joke! We also knew that we needed to get the cross back before campus safety removed it so that we could keep it forever as a reminder of what we did. We had some friends on campus safety so we casually brought up the subject of "the cross in Alumni Park". We found out that Campus Safety was terrified of the thing. They didn't know how it got there and they were too afraid to move it. We figured that eventually the mystery would die down and someone would go into the roped off area and remove it. And like I said, we wanted it back so we could keep it as a souvenir of the awesome prank we pulled. So after the cross had been up for 3 days we snuck in at night and removed it and put it back in my trunk. The next day the campus was buzzing with the news that the cross mysteriously disappeared. No one had any answers and we just laughed to ourselves and kept quiet.

A few years later, right before I graduated someone brought up the incident as a "remember when..." and I was able to tell the story. But only a few people actually know what happened. The rest of campus is still stumped.

What happened to the cross? Well one weekend when I was home visiting my family my mom saw it in my trunk and asked about it. I told her it was a prop so she asked if she could have it. I figured it would be the best way to "keep" it so now it decorates the hearth in front of the fireplace in my parent's living room. My mom has no idea the true story of that cross.

What about you? What's the craziest thing you've ever done?

1 Year

"You sat me down beside myself
To show me all the reasons I was wrong for you
Was this for real? It's hard to tell
'Cause it was such a beautiful mess we had got into

I'm gonna overcome this, paper hearts can't win this time
And all along I should have known this wasn't your dream, it was mine
I know you wanted me to give up this life to be
Everything I was back when you had the hands my heart was in

I was never good at goodbye...

Can I swallow this bottle whole?
So this brain in my head can forget your face

When we were starting out, you believed in me without a doubt
You were the finest thing to happen to a [girl] like me
It's so much harder now, I wanna try and tell you how
There is so much love in me, even though it's hard to see

And I was never good at goodbye...

Can I swallow this bottle whole?
So this brain in my head can forget your face
Can I swallow this bottle whole?
'Cause I'd rather be dead than make more mistakes

Today I couldn't stay awake
Feels like I'm drowning in this firewater lake
I won't be sleeping much tonight
It's not the same without you lying by my side
(Right beside me)

Can I swallow this bottle whole?
So this brain in my head can forget your face
Can I swallow this bottle whole?
'Cause I'd rather be dead than make more mistakes

I know you wanted me to give up my life to be
(Can I swallow this bottle whole?)
Everything I am when you're the only thing that I can see
(Can I swallow this bottle whole?)
I'm sorry but you're not the, not the only one for me
(So this brain in my head can forget your face)

You left me here beside myself
Left me with all the reasons why I was wrong for you"

How To Not Suck At Life

If I wrote a self help book it would be titled "How To Not Suck At Life" and would provide several small chapters with good (and let's face it, it is me so also entertaining) information along with tips and rules/guidelines. And then they can turn it into a TV show and I will be rich. Here are some initial chapter ideas.

How to not suck at work.
How to not suck in the kitchen.
How to not suck on the road.
How to not suck at the bar.
How to not suck at friendships.
How to not suck in relationships.
How to not suck at sex. (Gonna have to get a guest writer for this chapter. Haha!)
How to not suck with money.
How to not suck in public.
How to not suck at home.
How to not suck during holidays.
How to not suck over the phone/text.
How to not suck online.

And my personal favorite,
How to not suck at stalking.

Do any of you 2.5 people who might actually read my blog, have any suggestions?

Alcohol

Christians everywhere like to tell everyone else, Christian or not, how to live their lives. And guess what, if you aren't living your life according to their personal standards then chances are you're going to be judged. I hate those people. This is especially common for the topic of alcohol and is a topic that I feel very strongly about. Unfortunately I don't have time to go into all of the reasons but I would like to deal with one that is forefront in my life at the moment.

One example Christian's like to give for their personal reasons for not drinking are because they might cause someone to stumble if they were seen leaving the grocery store with a 6-pack in hand. They believe that someone might not feel comfortable approaching them and by purchasing a 6-pack they might lose out on a possible ministering or witnessing opportunity. Or they feel that someone might see them buy the 6-pack and think that it was ok for them to get drunk because the Pastor (or other member of the congregation) drinks. First of all, if that is someone's thought process if they saw someone in leadership buying alcohol then they have a bigger issue. Secondly, for the majority of people my pastor's age and in his sphere of influence that may be true. And it's also true that older Christian's may have a better chance of reaching more people if they choose to abstain, especially in this culture. And if that is what you chose to do then great! More power to ya. Just don't expect me to as well. And don't make it contingent on participation in the church worship team. ("Gee Christian, that is a pretty specific example" you say? Well....yeah.)

But in my sphere of influence and to a lot of people my age I am more approachable because I'm enjoying a drink with them, or because I have a tattoo, or because I have a lip ring and a smile. I can't tell you how many deep religious conversations I've had with people that you would not expect to simply because we were hanging out having a few drinks together. My decision to drink responsibly  opens doors for me to minister to people that would not be open to my Pastor or others. This is MY mission field. And I might lose part of that by abstaining completely. Think about it, if I was at a party (even one at my own house that my roommate is throwing) and someone asks me why I'm not drinking and I reply "because I'm on the worship team" they are going to assume that I am "holier than thou" and probably won't want to interact with me because I'm a stuck up Christian. Definitely not what I'm going for. Even if I were to say "I'm on the worship team and I'm not allowed to drink" then I would make it look like my church was super strict with a bunch of rules. And who wants that? If they are looking for a church with a bunch of rules there are a ton of LDS buildings within walking distances of just about anywhere, not to mention missionaries who will come to your house! I want to show people that my faith is different. And I feel like I do a good job of drinking responsibly and being an example of how to do it right. And in a church, (yes, even at Grace Baptist) there are members of the congregation who will choose to drink. Don't you think those members also deserve a leader like them? (Ok, so there really isn't any more sense in trying to make this a general post. Here is the deal: I either have to abstain from alcohol or I can't be on my church worship team. Harsh, I know.)

I feel like my pastor is saying that yes, as a Christian I am free to drink, it is not a sin. However, if I choose to do so I'm not good enough to be used in the church. I'm only good enough to sit in the pew and watch. And to say that as my pastor, it's the equivalent of saying God doesn't want to use me either.

Well, I disagree.

Please see Ecc. 9:7 and Psalms 104:14-15

So it's official, I quit the worship team. I don't want to be on a team with judgmental, legalistic Christians anyway.

01.01.1986

Reasons why it sucks to have a birthday on a holiday.

1. First and foremost it is a holiday to everyone else. It's your birthday second. The most important thing to everyone else is the fact that they have the day off or there are other parties to go to. Your birthday is secondary.

2. Everyone is too busy dealing with their own shit to think about you. You're an afterthought.

3. No one has time to plan anything for you because they're too busy planning their own stuff for their holiday.

4. If there is going to be any sort of party in your honor you have to plan it yourself....which just makes you feel lame. And most people won't attend because they have other holiday related things to do.

5. People go out of town for your birthday.

6. Everyone cancels at the last minute for your 14th birthday party. Thank you Y2K.

7. No one goes out of their way to make you feel special.

8. Not that presents are important, but it's so close after Christmas that everyone is broke and they feel like they don't need to get you a birthday present because they just gave you a Christmas present. Yet you're expected to give them a birthday gift whenever their birthday falls later in the year.

9. A lot of people don't even remember that it's your birthday because they're too busy thinking about what they're going to do for themselves that day.

10. All of your favorite restaurants and places are closed.

Today is New Years. That's all. I might as well not have a birthday.
