Misquotes

It seems to me that giving something to someone only to take it away is more cruel than withholding it in the first place.

'Tis better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. I disagree.

You can't know what you're missing if you never had it to begin with.

Ignorance really is bliss.

Crazy

Someone asked me recently what the craziest thing I'd ever done was. I'd have to say that the craziest thing I've ever done was in college. This is that story.

My roommate, a classmate, and I found this wooden cross that was basically 2 old pieces of wood nailed together while cleaning out the prop warehouse. We decided that we just had to think of something to do with it. So we put it in my trunk until we thought of the perfect thing.

About a week later there was some caution tape surrounding a circular piece of ground in the park in the middle of campus. The tape made pretty close to a perfect circle between 2 benches and 2 trees. That's when we decided it was time to use the cross. So late one night we snuck into the park and placed the cross in the center of blocked off area. We took a few pictures for evidence later and waited to see what would happen. The next day the sudden appearance of a "grave" was all anyone was talking about around campus. We sat on a bench in the park and watched student pass it by while staring or talking in groups around it. The talk around campus after that first day was that no one knew what it was, how it got there, and why it was there. So we decide to leave it up for a few days just for fun. The next day we all go to chapel and the president of the school gets up and starts talking about one of his best friends who had passed away suddenly that week. The next thing we know the gossip around campus is that the "grave" in Alumni Park was for President Conn's friend that had died.

We didn't know what to do. We didn't want to come out and say it was us and we were just messing around because now we would seem insensitive, even though we didn't know anyone had died when we placed the cross as a joke! We also knew that we needed to get the cross back before campus safety removed it so that we could keep it forever as a reminder of what we did. We had some friends on campus safety so we casually brought up the subject of "the cross in Alumni Park". We found out that Campus Safety was terrified of the thing. They didn't know how it got there and they were too afraid to move it. We figured that eventually the mystery would die down and someone would go into the roped off area and remove it. And like I said, we wanted it back so we could keep it as a souvenir of the awesome prank we pulled. So after the cross had been up for 3 days we snuck in at night and removed it and put it back in my trunk. The next day the campus was buzzing with the news that the cross mysteriously disappeared. No one had any answers and we just laughed to ourselves and kept quiet.

A few years later, right before I graduated someone brought up the incident as a "remember when..." and I was able to tell the story. But only a few people actually know what happened. The rest of campus is still stumped.

What happened to the cross? Well one weekend when I was home visiting my family my mom saw it in my trunk and asked about it. I told her it was a prop so she asked if she could have it. I figured it would be the best way to "keep" it so now it decorates the hearth in front of the fireplace in my parent's living room. My mom has no idea the true story of that cross.

What about you? What's the craziest thing you've ever done?
